They have conducted $500,000 of trenching work on the Leitch and Lafontaine zinc deposits. They are located north of Kazabazua and east of Blue Sea and Bouchette.
The total Gatineau Zinc Project budget is $3,500,000 over a few years.
Some highlights from Midland Exploration Inc.'s published material:
"...After [the] 2nd World War, exploration works led the discovery of the Lafontaine and Leitch deposits and several mineralized showings. These deposits respectively contain historic resources of 27,000 tonnes at 12% Zn and 57,000 tonnes at 8% Zn.
...In the Bouchette-Leitch sector, the Lafontaine deposit was mined by Norzinc Mines in 1953, producing 20,000 tonnes of ore at 14% Zn (open pit, 12 m of depth). The Leitch deposit has [a] historic resource of 75,000 tonnes of ore at 8% Zn (St-Joseph Explorations, 1980). The Bouchette deposit was traced by holes and trenches over 1.3 km of length.
...In 2007 and 2008, geochemical and geophysical surveys done by Midland identified new targets for drilling.
[2010] ...involved a ground magnetic and electromagnetic geophysical survey, trenching and diamond drilling."
For a very informative description of many aspects of the metalic chemical element zinc, see the wikipedia entry here:
Note in particular the sections:
-on Mining where there is a description of how sulphur dioxide is needed to leach the metal from the ore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc#Mining_and_processing) and,
- on Environmental Impact where sulphur dioxide and cadmium vapour, heavy metals in mining slag and the surrounding earth and the related risk of heavy metals to nearby waterways are mentioned (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc#Environmental_impact).
